The ancient city of Rome – the Eternal Capital – is to host its first ever Scotch whisky festival this weekend.

The Spirit of Scotland Whisky Festival takes place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 March on the Aranciera di San Sisto, and will feature whiskies from Ardbeg, Caol Ila and others, reports the Young In Rome blog.

Tickets are 7euros, which includes an engraved tasting glass and glass holder, as well as one tasting voucher to be spent as you please. Additional tokens can be purchased at 1 euro each, samples will vary in the number of tokens for each.

The festival will also feature other top Scottish produce, including salmon, shortbread (of course) and jam. Entertainment will also be provided by the City of Rome Pipe Band.

One of the side events bound to attract the most attention The Fantastic Whiskies of the 60’s masterclass on Sunday afternoon. For 50 Euros participants will be able to taste four cask strength, vintage bottlings from the collection of Francesco Mattonetti of Le Carovanerie di Arezzo, including; a Laphroaig 20 years old 1965-85, Highland Park 34 years old 1955-89, Port Ellen 15 years old 1969-85, 64.7%, and an Ardbeg 23 years 1974-97.
