Dr Bill Lumsden of Ardbeg and Glenmorangie has a reputation in the whisky world for being the experimental type – and now he’s taking those experiments out of this world!
Particles of new make spirit from Ardbeg and charred oak have been sent up to the International Space Station examine the chemical reactions between them in near-zero gravity.
The experiment is being carried out by US firm NanoRacks as part of their ongoing research on the effects of gravity, reports the BBC website.
Details of the experiment were released as part of the annual International Science Festival in Edinburgh.
Lumsden said: “This experiment will throw new light on the effect of gravity on the maturation process. We are all tremendously excited by this experiment – who knows where it will lead?”
