TV adds to whisky's popularity

It seems that its not just demand for premium product that is boosting whisky sales worldwide – but retro-tv is responsible too.

According to new research, television series such as Mad Men, The Hour and Life on Mars, set in the 50s and 60s, which feature the characters drinking whisky have also helped to boost sales of Scotland’s top export.

Figures from market researchers Kantor Worldpanel have shown a 13.4% increase in single malt sales over the last year, reports scotsman.com.

While the Scotch Whisky Association released figures last week showing a 22%increase in total whisky exports.

Rosemary Gallagher, of the SWA, said: “Anecdotal evidence suggests younger people are being attracted to malt, partly because it is seen as an aspirational and stylish drink.”
