A single grain whisky from a South African distillery has made it into the latest edition of Ian Buxton’s 101 Whiskies To Try Before You Die, which went on sale this week.
Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, produced at The James Sedgewick Distillery in Wellington, is South Africa’s first 100% grain whisky, and the creation of master distiller Andy Watts. The whisky pays tribute to Andrew Geddes Bain, the pioneering road builder who planned and built Bain’s Kloof Pass which connected Wellington to the interior in 1853.
Inspired by the pass and its natural beauty, the whisky is crafted from the finest South African grain and double-maturated to impart flavour and complexity, resulting in an exceptionally smooth and distinctive whisky, according to the distiller’s media release.
At the 2011 International Wine and Spirits Competition, judges praised the whisky for its “excellent, clean, lively entry into the mouth with sweet grain firmness and beautiful balance”.
Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky is available from leading South African liquor outlets and retails for about R200 per 750ml bottle.
